Title: High-power terahertz-band oscillators and amplifiers
Abstract: 

As is well known, the terahertz technology has various applications, including high-date rate communication, high-resolution radar, and scientific research. However, the lack of terahertz radiation sources with moderate power has hindered the development of the terahertz technology, which is one of the most important factors resulting in the ‘terahertz gap’. The vacuum electron device is one of the most significant approaches to generating or amplifying high-power terahertz signals. In this talk, our recent work regarding terahertz-band oscillators, including extended interaction oscillators (EIOs) and backward wave oscillators, and traveling wave amplifiers. In the experiment of two EIO prototypes, 10 W and 1.2 kW output power was measured at 0.2 THz and 0.1 THz, respectively. The design of a 0.22 THz sheet-beam traveling wave amplifier will be presented. Simulation results show that this amplifier could produce over 150 W power over a wide bandwidth of 60 GHz. To further enhance the output power, the concept of combining multiple sheet electron beams and the high-order overmoded planar slow-wave structure is proposed and studied. The design, microfabrication, VNA measurement of related passive components, such as the mode converter, the power coupler, and the RF window will also be presented.

Biography: 
Guoxiang Shu received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, China, in 2017. From 2015 to 2017, he visited the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK as a visiting researcher. Since Sep. 2017, he works as an assistant professor in the College of Electronics and Information Engineering, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, China. He is also with the Institute of Microelectronics, Shenzhen University. His main research interests include high power millimeter-wave and terahertz-wave oscillators and amplifiers, millimeter-wave and terahertz-wave passive devices, such as mode converters, couplers, microwave biosensors, antennas, and quasi-optical resonators. He is the principal investigator of 10 research projects, including the projects granted by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He is also the co-investigator of 4 major research projects with three of them with funding of more than 17,000,000 RMB, including the National Key R&D Plan Project. He has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers on international conferences and journals in recent years, including 29 IEEE transaction papers (IEEE TMTT, TST, TED, and TPS) and 3 IEEE EDL papers. One of his papers published on IEEE EDL has been selected as “Editor's Pick” and highlighted on the cover page of the journal. And his APL paper has been highlighted on the Journal Homepage and selected as “Editor's Pick” and “Top Articles in Device Physics”. He has served as a peer reviewer for 10 SCI journals, including IEEE EDL, TED, TPS, etc. He has been licensed 4 Chinese invention patents. He has delivered invited talks and served as a TPC member in several international conferences. He was granted the title of Shenzhen High-level Talent and is a core member of the Shenzhen Peacock Plan Team.
